For Maison Margiela's first fragrance created exclusively for a city, and the first Eau de Parfum in their REPLICA Memory Collection, our strategy was to turn scent into something audiences could see, feel and remember. The campaign rests on one emotional insight: Tokyo, 1995, a turning point when handwritten letters and faxes gave way to email, and the unsent letter became a symbol of feelings written but never delivered.
Since fragrance cannot be smelled online, we translated its three-note story into a visual language. Sumi ink, red cedarwood and white musk guided every scene, expressed through traditional calligraphy, ink drops, stationery, wood textures, handwritten pages, polaroids and kraft paper boxes. These oriental and retro elements anchor the campaign in its era while staying true to REPLICA's philosophy of recreating memories. Motion is deliberately unhurried, with ink blooming and paper settling, creating a contemplative, wistful calm atmosphere and mirrors the fragrance's settled character.
The assets work as a journey to store a memory. Tactile close-ups invite viewers to almost smell fresh ink and feel the grain of cedarwood, placing them inside 1995 Tokyo and connecting every frame to emotion and mood. Clear focal points, consistent pacing and flexible formats ensure the digital experience stays cohesive across all platforms and placements needed by the client.
We used AI techniques to build and refine environments, materials, lighting and composition at a level of precision that makes the content visually indistinguishable from reference footage shot on location - the assets are aligned flawlessly and look exactly like an extension of the raw scene. This lets the brand continue to create more complementary content, such as new scenes, formats and market adaptations, without skyrocketing the shoot budget or doing additional on-site productions. The result is a cost-effective, scalable content system that preserves cinematic quality.
The campaign delivers a cohesive, immersive story that deepens the fragrance's emotional resonance, reinforces Maison Margiela's niche luxury positioning and gives audiences a reason to linger, engage and remember.
