New York Local Fish Sustainability: From Port to Plate is an immersive visual journalism project that unveils the journey of seafood from our local waters to the plate, spotlighting sustainable practices that set New York apart. In a country where nearly 80 percent of seafood is imported—often linked to environmentally costly and ethically questionable practices—this project champions the region’s science-based, locally managed fisheries. By leveraging interactive visuals, dynamic maps, and compelling firsthand narratives from fishermen, we transform complex regulatory and ecological data into an accessible story for every New Yorker.

At the heart of our narrative is the detailed case study of porgy, a locally abundant species that exemplifies sustainable management in action. Our project carefully documents every phase of the process: from the operation of commercial fish boats equipped with regulated netting systems to the meticulous collection of landing data at key Long Island ports. For instance, porgy is harvested under strict guidelines that require a minimum 5-inch diamond mesh in otter trawls, ensuring that only sustainable quantities are caught. This precision in monitoring, combined with transparent reporting via vessel trip reports submitted to the Department of Environmental Conservation, underscores the efficacy of New York’s local management system.

Moreover, our project illustrates the significant environmental benefits of choosing local seafood. By comparing the low carbon footprint of transporting fish from Montauk to the Fulton Fish Market with the high emissions associated with long-haul international shipping, we emphasize how local sourcing can mitigate environmental impact. Alongside robust data visualizations, the project introduces viewers to the top five local seafood options that not only delight the palate but also support a healthier ecosystem and a stronger local economy.

Ultimately, New York Local Fish Sustainability: From Port to Plate is a celebration of ecological responsibility and local innovation. It serves as both an educational tool and a call to action—inviting consumers, communities, and policymakers alike to support sustainable seafood practices that protect our marine resources for generations to come.
